American Society of Civil Engineers is an organization in America. It updates crucial information in the field of Technology and Engineering. It was founded in 1852; it has more than one hundred and forty thousand members from civil engineering profession. It draws its members worldwide, and it is the oldest engineering society in United States.
Various institutions, Societies, professional membership organizations and other industries, are sponsoring the organization. The ASCE represents many faces of engineering work and it is responsible for all Engineering professionals for their entire working life. Some of engineering professions under ASCE include; Bioengineering Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. However, all those who work in those fields specialize in Transportation Technology, Architecture, Structural Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Mining Engineering, and lastly Building Technology. Some of the organizations that make up ASCE include; Dewatering Construction Service Group, Hayward Barker, US Army Corps of Engineers, Whitney, Bailey, Cox & Magnani, LLC, B & E Jackson & Associates, The Charles Pankow Foundation, Fluor Corporation, The Port Authority of New York/New Jersey and Judith Nitsch Engineering, Inc.

Goals and Missions of ASCE
ASCE engineers are global leaders specializing in making a better life for everyone in the world. They provide essential value to their members, serve the public and advance civil engineering. The Main reason for advancement of technology is to enhance the quality, sustainability, competitiveness, knowledge and environmental stewardship (ASCE Board).
The organization also provides new advanced tools for lifelong learning to their members. This enables members to have a continuous growth throughout their career. The organization is the sole institution mandated in promoting professionalism throughout the society. This helps to influence public policy and stature of civil engineers.
The organization develops and support environmental and infrastructure stewardship to safeguard the public safety and health. This leads to an improvement in the quality of life. At a time, the institution develops civil engineer leaders to widen their members’ perceptiveness, promote their public interest and enhance their career growth.
Environmental scanning enables identification of vital issues and trends that could have effects on civil engineering, ASCE and civil engineers. These are issues that society must successfully address in order to serve its members in a changing environment. Input could be sort from any source such as; ASCE national and local entities, ASCE members, association both outside and inside architecture, reports from think tanks and lastly, presentation by experts.
There are various issues in the profession and the association’s environment than any single entity can deal with. This is why a sorting out process in the form of “radar screen” is encouraged. The system limits the number of issues to vary between ten and fifteen. In the end, issues are categorized to their magnitude. This means that issues that fall under category one and two in ASCE list have a significant impact on ASCE membership and profession. The radar screen serves ASCE leaders as a tool from outreach to grass roots. Leaders ought to use it as an opening or feedback on what is necessary to members. Issues that make it onto radar system are always grouped into two categories. The first category consists of high-priority issues. Secondly, are the issues monitored by the society but it has no plan for them. They include issues that contain faint signals. They may be considered in future trends and development (ASCE Board).
All members are always invited to participate, discuss and identify strategic issues and rate their importance. However, the ASCE Board with assistance from SPC sets the priorities. This falls under ASCE Board’s strategic and fiduciary responsibility because the strategies launched require a significant amount of funding, volunteer and staff resources. Due to the investment required in expenses, staff, volunteers and society attention, only some of strategies are considered at a time.
On setting the proprieties, the Board also decides what it wants to achieve in addressing the issue. That means it needs to establish desired outcomes. The desired outcomes are expressed in two or three points form. It includes clear statements with clear images of what will have been accomplished if the strategy becomes successful.
Issues to Address through Strategies
The top in the list is the development of infrastructure. Years of poor infrastructure maintenance and investment has limited the profession effectiveness in communicating with the public. As a result, public health, welfare and safety are at risk. Secondly, there is poor economic growth and the economy cannot sustain itself. The organization is sure if it can achieve its goal of developing infrastructure, the economy will grow to enormous heights. The quality of life will improve due to improved infrastructure and economy.
The ASCE also aims at improving the education system of engineers such that BS holders can practice and become professionals. ASCE intends to make the students competent in engineering specialties. Apart from this, they also want to ensure the students acquire good communication, leadership and management skills. ASCE intends to encourage its members to further their education and get mentoring from peers. If this is achieved, there would be sustainability in the economy and the environment. This would ensure civil engineers become environmental steward, policy leaders and life-cycle planners.
ASCE students if well trained to be managers, they would curb increasing prevalence of man-made, technological and natural risk. Within the architect and natural environment, the civil engineers would be able to asses and manage any risks that threaten human life. The civil engineers would also become good innovators in construction, operation, technology and design.
The professionals within ASCE are empowered to come up with good policies to ensure everyone in the whole world is accessible to clean water. Lastly, the Engineers ought to develop methods of adapting to climatic change and the environment (ASCE Board).
