The State of Vermont was the first to pass a law that allows homosexuality in 2000 and up to now the act is allowed and supported in other six out of the 50 states namely; Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine and recently, Washington D.C and the District of Columbia. The same sex spouses in these areas receive benefits at state level. States like New York and Rhode Island recognize homosexuality but they are not allowed.
