“Do not let one failure bring you down. Move forward, think positively, try your best and you will eventually succeed.” My mother’s inspirational words are the forces that push me to work hard and to succeed in life.
Since the day she was born, my mother has continually battled one hardship after another. The Vietnam War rushed in with a vengeance and disrupted her early life. With a newborn baby in one hand (my sister), and a bag filled with provisions in the other, my mother fled from one village to another in search of shelter from the constant bombing and firing of guns that were all around them. My mother and sister took refuge in dark huts sleeping on the cold cement ground and not knowing what tomorrow would bring.
After the war ended, my parents moved to Tay Ninh, Vietnam. My mother’s life improved significantly, however, she had to work day and night, seven days a week to keep the family business going and make ends meet. She did what she had to do to provide for her family.

My family eventually moved to America where my mother currently holds down two jobs and still works every day of the week. She has never had the luxury of a vacation, a trip to the spa, or even a day off to relax at home, yet she never complained, and she was grateful for the work. Through all of her trials and troubles, she put on a smile and kept a positive outlook on life always supporting her family in every possible way.
My mother is a strong and dependable woman who always keeps her promises and stands by her loved ones. She is a very sensitive and caring person and is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, friend or foe. She does not let other people’s negative words or attitudes defer her from her naturally kind and nurturing personality.
Her open-mindedness and generous heart have influenced me to be as good a human being as I can possibly be, and her bright personality gave me the strength and ability to always be happy and optimistic about what life has to offer. She gives me the courage and the confidence I need to wake up every morning and face the day. Without her special smile and words of encouragement, I sometimes wonder how I would make it without her.
My mother’s love, care, and dedication for her family and friends make me realize and appreciate how much my parents have sacrificed for our family, and I will forever be grateful for that. She taught me to be thankful and content with whatever I have and wherever I make my home, but also to be reminded of my heritage, to acknowledge the life, culture, and the beliefs my ancestors lived and died for.
It is my mother’s undying love, strength, and guidance that pushes me to strive, to attain my goals, and to accomplish my dreams in order to have the best that life offers. Thanks to my mother, I have been provided with the tools that I need to build my life, and someday, somehow to repay her for all of the things she worked so hard to give me, for all she had to sacrifice to ensure that I did not have to endure the hardships that fell upon her I look forward to that day, the day that I am able to give her the luxuries she never had, and to give back her what she so selflessly gave to me; a wealth of love, hope, and happiness.
My mother’s presence is the backbone that molds the person I am today, and the person I will become in the future. She is the one constant in my life, the rock that I lean on.
