Marriage

“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin depicts a woman who is informed that her husband is dead because of a road accident (Showalter 1985). The woman is shown to be suffering from heart disease. This is due to the problems that she was experiencing in her marriage. It seems that the husband confined her in the house and the woman suffering a lot. This story represents a woman as many other women that are individuals who are mistreated in marriage and are left to do all the work at home. When the woman receives the news, it appears that she becomes relieved, as she is aware that her problems have ended. The heroine, however, dies when her husband comes home. The husband had not died; therefore, the woman is shocked because her suffering is expected to continue.

“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman has a similar story. It shows how a woman is confined in a house and never allowed to get out (Showalter 1985). This is why she suffers from mental deceases. Women, in this case, are represented as individuals who are married just to serve men. They are to do domestic chores and never communicate with the other people in a community. These women appear as domestic workers who are fully under the control of their husbands.

“A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell also represents marriage as an institution where the women are supposed to remain in the house (Glaspell 2007). For 20 years, since marriage, the heroine of the story did not visit her friend. The story represents women as people who are not supposed to say everything to their husbands. They are supposed to obey male orders.

The three papers have a common theme of representing women as servants of their husbands in the marriage institution. In all three cases, women are not supposed to get out of their marriage house. Heroines are not allowed to socialize. They are required to strictly obey their husbands’ rules and attend to all domestic chores. The papers show women as suffering individuals in their marriage. These women are shown to be exhausted, having mental problems and suffering from the heart diseases. This is due to the problems that they experience under the control of their husbands.
